The Exact Strategy I’m Taking On My Xmas Break (It’s Not What You Think)
Everywhere you look, it seems like people are talking about strategic planning and prepping for the new year. But my strategy for the Christmas break is the exact opposite. And I honestly think it’s the smartest thing I could do for both my business and my sanity.
If you’re listening to this at the time of release, you’re probably right at the start of your Christmas break. So let me set the scene for a different kind of holiday; one filled with white space, where the only goal is to relax, recharge and let new ideas bubble up without any pressure to hustle.
My Business Shuts Down Completely
For two full weeks, my business goes totally offline. No emails, no Slack, no sneaky content creation. Our clients know this well in advance, since our out-of-office notices go out from November. After ten years in business, I know these breaks aren’t just nice. They’re absolutely essential.
Embracing White Space
So what will I actually do over Christmas? Honestly, not much. That’s the point. I’m a huge believer in the power of downtime. Liz Gilbert’s Big Magic is one of my all-time favourites for a reason. She talks about creativity and how our best ideas show up in the quiet moments, not when we’re glued to our screens. For me, I always notice my best ideas pop up in the shower or when I’m out walking. That’s the kind of magic I’m after.
Between Christmas and New Year, I step away from work completely. No planning, no content batching, no “getting ahead.” Just intentional rest, giving my mind the space to wander and recharge.
Family, Fun and Aussie Summer
This year, I’m leaning all the way into family time. We’re hosting a big Christmas lunch for 25 people, my mother-in-law is staying with us and the house will be filled with little ones running around. Living two minutes from the beach means plenty of swims and soaking up the Aussie summer. I can’t wait to just switch off and be present for all of it.
Why This Works for Me
This isn’t about how everyone “should” do Christmas. It’s about what actually works for me. Stepping away from the noise helps me reset and makes space for new ideas to grow. I’ve already done my planning, set my goals and locked in next year’s revenue, so I can truly relax and enjoy this break.
During this downtime, my only focus is unwinding and letting my imagination roam. I honestly believe our best ideas come when we’re not forcing them.
As you head into your own break, I hope you find what really replenishes you. Whether it’s family, beach walks or simply giving yourself permission to rest, remember that stepping back can be the wisest thing you do for your business.
Wishing you a restful, joy-filled Christmas break. See you in the New Year, recharged and ready for whatever comes next.
