Why Your Mastermind Business Model Doesn’t Feel Like Freedom Right Now + How to Fix It

I’ve noticed a recurring theme lately when chatting to clients who run mastermind groups. It’s this uneasy feeling that your business model, instead of granting freedom, is feeling more like a cage. The fact that this keeps coming up tells me there’s some sort of problem in the zeitgeist that we need to solve. So, whether you’re running a mastermind or any online business, let’s uncover why it might feel stifling right now—and how we can steer it back to the freedom lane.

The Journey to Mastermind Fatigue

Imagine launching a mastermind that hits those dreamy 20k, 30k, or even 50k months, only to find it becomes more of a weight than a win. I’ve stood in those shoes and wondered if I’d veered off course. Maybe you’re pondering if it’s time to pivot to a membership model, or something entirely different?

If you’re nodding along, look at this as a chance to get curious about tweaks you can make. It’s tempting to jump models but often the key lies in honing what you’ve got. Every business model flirts with that feeling of confinement at some point. It’s our cue to adjust and find balance again.

Spotting Your Freedom Zappers

Are you constantly racing against the clock? Or feeling that emotional exhaustion sneak in? Perhaps there’s a mental load you can’t shake, leaving you unable to connect with your own creative spark. These are tell-tale signs we’ve got to address.

Reclaiming Freedom: Action Steps

1. Reinstate Your Boundaries

Your freedom might be slipping through loose boundaries. Start by assessing where your boundaries have weakened. Have client requests led you to add more services or calls than you initially planned? It’s crucial to communicate your limits clearly and consistently with clients. This could mean revisiting your mastermind’s original objectives and sticking to them, cutting back on additional calls, or services that dilute your focus.

2. Say Goodbye to Excess Customisation

Too much tailoring can wear you out. Customisation should enhance your client experience, not become a source of stress. Implement systems that can handle routine tasks, allowing you to focus on high-value, personalised aspects without feeling drained. Look at where you’re over-personalising and standardise those areas with templates, streamlined processes and automations that still allow for a bespoke touch.

3. Rework Your Time and Energy Flow

Your schedule should serve you, not the other way around. Take stock of when you’re at your peak performance during the day and structure your activities around this period. Consider adopting a model where you have designated “call” and “non-call” weeks. This can give you much-needed downtime to focus on creative or strategic pursuits. For me, three weeks of calls followed by a call-free week works wonders. Find a rhythm that resonates with your life and energy levels.

4. Align with the Right Clients

Misaligned clients are energy drains. Re-evaluate your marketing and sales process to ensure you’re attracting the right audience. This means being unapologetically clear about who your mastermind is for, and possibly refining your messaging to speak directly to these ideal clients. Evaluate your current client list: are there individuals not aligning with your vision? Look into how you can either adjust your approach or gently transition them out of your program, allowing room for those who truly belong.

Freedom within your business is totally achievable with the right strategies in place. And with these actionable tips, you can start to see real change.
